Ocracoke’s Historic Inn — In the Heart of It All

Private, modern rooms·Keyless entry & AC·Best rates when you book direct

A Beach Worth the Journey

Ocracoke may be off the beaten path — but that’s the point. Accessible only by ferry, private boat, or small plane, the island rewards travelers with miles of unspoiled shoreline and rolling dunes.

In fact, Ocracoke’s Lifeguarded Beach was named #1 Best Beach in America by Dr. Beach in 2022, and has ranked among the nation’s top ten for years.

“One of America’s most celebrated beaches.”

By Lantern and Legacy — Since 1925

A century-old home, lovingly preserved as a place of gathering, story, and rest on Ocracoke Island.

Nestled beneath the sweeping arms of live oaks, Thurston House has welcomed travelers for generations. Built in 1925, the inn carries with it the spirit of Ocracoke’s past — lantern light on the porch, laughter in the parlor, and mornings wrapped in the salt-kissed air of the coast.

Today, we honor that legacy by blending timeless charm with thoughtful comforts. Whether you’re seeking quiet retreat, seaside adventure, or connection to the island’s history, Thurston House offers a stay rooted in authenticity and grace.

A Legacy Carried Forward

From 1925 to today, Thurston House has been more than a place to stay — it is a story of continuity, care, and quiet grace.

The History

Built in 1925 beneath the live oaks, Thurston House welcomed fishermen, ferry hands, and wandering families long before Ocracoke had a season. Lanterns once lit the porch; stories unspooled in wicker chairs; salt and pine drifted in on a steady breeze. A century on, its timbers still hold the hush of early mornings and the soft cadence of island evenings.

Our Stewardship

Today, we—Olivia and Hunter—carry the keys and the promise. Preservation leads every decision: original character, carefully kept, with quiet comforts for the modern traveler. We mend where it matters, polish what time has dulled, and add only what serves the guest and the house. The aim is simple: let the inn’s soul shine and its story endure.

“We don’t own Thurston so much as we keep watch — tending a small island tradition so guests can slip into it like an old favorite book.”

My husband and I stayed for 3 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Our room was large and comfortable and the breakfast each morning was delicious. Close to everything in the village.

The room was charming and spotless! Comfy bed, heart pine floors, outdoor shower and a great deck near the harbor. Exactly the island vibe we hoped for.
Guest Review
We stayed for our 36th wedding anniversary. Comfortable, cozy, clean. Each room has that warm feeling like Grandma’s house — but with all the modern touches.
